Nissin Cup Noodle Curry カップヌードル カレー

Picture borrowed from the Nissin website.

Cup Noodle is something I think of as "otaku food", it's the essential food of those kids that start off with an interest in Japan and then develop a full-blown obsession with it. It's sold alongside hentai manga, sailor uniforms and black black gum at Anime conventions.

Seriously though, it's my husband's favourite easy meal. It combines two elements of popular Japanese food into one small bowl - Curry and Noodles.

All you need is a means to heat water, and 3 minutes. It's as easy as boiling the water, pouring it into the cup, shutting the lid closed for 3 minutes and then the noodles are cooked and it's ready to eat.

I've seen Yasu consume copious amounts of Cup Noodle over the years and wondered what the attraction was. Seeing as I have a Japanese Snack blog I decided to review it because it does fit well into the snack category.

When I opened the lid on the cup noodle the smell of curry that wafted up was quite pleasant. It reminded me of House Vermont Curry. The taste was mild, rich and sweet with an undertaste of beef stock. There were small cubes of vegetables floating around in the sauce such as spring onion, carrots, potato, and corn. The noodles were flat and soft, and went well with the curry and vegetables.

I really enjoyed this and tasting it today made me totally change my mind about it. I thought it would be something I would never eat, but I could see this being a great snack for myself too.

I found it interesting to read the ingredients list on the pack which among other things mentions cheese and peanut butter! I'm not sure what they bring to the party or how much is contained within but it's certainly funny to see them listed.

I will definitely buy and eat this again soon!

The Cup Noodle website is quite interesting and has all the flavours listed as well as downloads and games.

I can't believe you've never had Cup Noodles before! That's a shock.
I used to eat it a lot as an afterschool snack, but I don't like it so much anymore. I prefer the same brand of ramen, except it's the kind you actually have to cook. (Yep, I prefer the long way of cooking the same noodles rather than the instant way.) Well, cup noodles are pretty fatty and not really good for you.
But I've never seen curry flavored cup noodles before. Only the regular chicken and shrimp. Seems like it tasted good though. :D

I'm not really an instant food or noodles gal, so it's never really interested me enough to try it before :) It's really only because my hubby kept raving on about it that I ended up giving it a go, so all thanks to him that I'm now liking it too! :)

hahaha yes.. curry cup noodle ...

They used to do a milk curry version ( I guess they meant "korma"?) and they were amazing, but they were discontinued. I wanted to cry. But its probably best though, I never knew they were over 400 Kcals a cup .. omg...!!!

AND i just remembered (sorry to blog-jack!)

They have a cup noodle factory!!! And you can go and design and make and customize your own cup noodle. And decorate the outside etc. Plus you get to learn the history of cup-noodles... more interesting than you would imagine. If possible (and if your addiction to cupnoodles begins here) you should try to pay a visit next time your in Japan! :D

They have a cup noodle factory? OMG!! Gotta go there next time we go to Japan, it would be cool to make your own cup of noodles. Did you do that?

I've recently found some really interesting flavours of cup noodle on the nissin website... there was a milky shio, cheese curry, chicken curry, meat king etc, getting a friend to send some over to try, so i'll probably review them too. The milky curry one sounds like it was really nice. That's the problem about japan, they're always changing things up, you can never count on one flavour sticking around!

Anyway, thanks for commenting Fiona :) Very informative! haha xx

I usually eat instant noodles(nestle maggi and thai instant noodles), but I still can't find that snack. Luckilly I really got a great time to enjoy some noodles when I got to my uncles house in USA. The noodles there also have a pasta flavour and Nissin is also present there. So when I go to USA, I'll definetly try these too.
